If we think about when during the year we start to make a list of new goals, objectives or projects we will realize that we do it every time a new year begins, however, in many occasions we do not find enough motivation to start developing the tasks that are necessary to accomplish it; in the book "100 ways to motivate yourself" by Steve Chandler we find many ideas to achieve it, these are some of them:
Start with the end in mind.
The author tells us "start with the end in mind". If you can have a powerful vision of your last moments of life you will surely be able to make much better use of your time, which is limited. The book describes the story of Anthony Burgess, who after being diagnosed with a brain tumor and for which the doctors did not give a life expectancy of more than a year, began to write the novels he had always wanted to write. In that year he became a full-time writer and managed to complete 5 works. Surprisingly, after that year his cancer had disappeared and during his life he would write more than 70 books. Surely if it had not been for that diagnosis he would never have put all his efforts to achieve his goals, but we do not have to be in extreme situations to learn to value our life, and not to waste time on irrelevant activities. Visualize yourself 30 or 40 years later and ask yourself if what you are doing now is in accordance with what you want to achieve at the end of your life, if so continue doing it, but if not it is never too late to change. The direction of your life is in you and in each of the decisions you make.
Plan your work in advance
Establishing a plan of activities keeps you more motivated. When you can measure the hours worked and the results you can establish strategies for improvement. Get in the habit of planning your work in advance and you will see how you can stay more motivated by feeling in control of your time.
Divide your projects into smaller tasks
Let's imagine you want to write a book, the thought of having to dedicate many hours of work to finish it is overwhelming, but what if you only set out to write one page a day, it doesn't sound so complicated, does it? Breaking down large tasks can be key to maintaining our motivation throughout a project.
Take action
Even if you know that what you are doing is not going the way you want, many times we want everything to be perfect the first time, the author tells us that we must start doing the tasks no matter if at the beginning they do not go well, for example: if you have to write something but you feel that you do not get the words start writing everything that comes to your mind then you will have the time to correct and improve your ideas, but the most important thing in the first step will be to take action. It will always be better to start with something than to start postponing activities for later.
Find your purpose in life
You should look for clues to help you discover what makes you happiest. It is said that you can't have a completely fulfilling life if you don't have the ability to serve other people, but you also can't serve others if what you are doing right now doesn't make you feel satisfied. In the book it is said that there is no greater goal than to know, while you are on your deathbed, that you lived a fulfilled life because you were able to do everything that made you happy. If you do something that makes you feel fulfilled, you will be able to live happier and more motivated throughout your life.
Money
If you are giving a beneficial service to society and because of it you are gaining wealth, that is good. Money is a determining factor for livelihood and if your effort is giving you magnificent monetary rewards, just remember that money cannot be your ultimate goal, there must be a greater purpose, which you will work for every day of your existence.
Be alone with yourself
Dedicate at least half an hour a day to be alone with yourself, without internet, without cell phone, or any distraction, sometimes the best answers come in the moments where we are not doing any activity, so we can solve many of our concerns. Remember that motivation does not come from the outside world, nor from the things we achieve, but from within us and the only way to listen to what that inner voice wants to tell us is to get away from our environment for a few minutes.
Find your master key
The idea is to look for those elements that motivate you, which can be: a song, a movie, a story, etc. Look for those things that give you motivation and use them to your advantage, to your benefit.
Keep your focus on your goals
Many times we can be very excited about a project or business we have in mind or that we are already developing, but we lose motivation when we think of all the potential problems we may have because of things like: my competitors can eliminate me from the market, we are in crisis, there is a lot of competition, what if it doesn't work? Probably all this will start to affect me, but the idea here is that we should not focus our attention on these potential problems, as this does not help us to achieve our goals, keep your attention on what you want to achieve, to look for alternatives. If you are completely focused on achieving a great goal you will surely find a way to achieve it, for example: if I want to build a successful business I must ask myself: How can I improve, what should I change, from whom should I learn?
Make every day a masterpiece
Remember that life is now, do not waste your days and take advantage of every single moment in a productive way, every day is a new opportunity to complete your goals little by little. Remember the domino effect, a great goal can only be completed one task at a time on a consistent basis. Take each day as an opportunity to continue building what you want, think that you are a painter and that each new day you have a blank sheet of paper on which you have to make a new painting and do not make that painting negative things. Remember that if you have difficulties today you cannot eliminate them all in an instant but you can change them little by little with each action you take.
I have also been in the place you are now. When I started my dream of starting my own Medical Clinic and was the Executive Director, I did not know how to fulfill my responsibilities at work and be present at home with my family at the same time. However, after making changes in my productivity, goal setting and leadership, I was able to take my company forward through an economic recession the country was in and achieve positive results; all while being home in time to have dinner with my family every night.
I now teach the same principles that helped my leadership, along with my team, here at CIME Academy.
