The first important idea of the book is to understand that we have the power to change our lives according to the choices we make. It is not true to say that our future depends exclusively on having an influential family or having greater opportunities. It is true that there are people who are born with advantages, but we can also find many cases whose humble origins have not been an impediment to build the life they have always wanted. In conclusion: "It is our decisions and not the conditions that determine our destiny".
You may be saying yes, it is true, I know that my decisions are what determine my destiny, but how do I make the right choice, why do I often prefer to watch my favorite TV series instead of working on my projects? In order to understand this, it is necessary to know that all our actions are aimed at "avoiding pain or increasing pleasure", for this reason sometimes it is much more rewarding to opt for a little entertainment instead of doing activities that require more effort.
The way in which we can change our erroneous behaviors is by associating them with pain, for example, think about the consequences for you if you dedicate your time to television, surely the project you are working on will be delayed and maybe if you keep putting it off you will not have enough money to take the trip you have wanted so much; there are many negative consequences that you can associate with these actions that are not helping your development. The key is to see the long term consequences that our actions can have.it is true that working on your projects or sitting down to read is not going to be the most fun, but if you visualize yourself in the future financially free, traveling and enjoying with your family you will surely have more motivation to do the things that now seem to be a sacrifice.remember that having "the ability to control immediate gratification" is a strong indicator of future success.
A famous experiment conducted by Standford University supports this idea: it tested more than 500 four-year-old children, the dynamics of the experiment was to give each child a candy, if the child had the ability to wait 15 minutes without eating it would receive another candy, but if on the contrary preferred to ingest it before the stipulated time would not receive more. The result of the experiment showed that out of 10 children only 3 could wait satisfactorily to receive their second candy. The most interesting thing about this experiment was that 20 years later it was proven that a large percentage of those children who had been able to wait the 15 minutes had also had better grades and in general had achieved better results than those who had not resisted the temptation. In conclusion, seeking short-term pleasure through immediate gratification is what often prevents us from achieving our goals, and always keep in mind whether the decision you are making now is bringing you closer to your goals or on the contrary is taking you further away from them.
It should also be noted that there are five other factors that influence decision making, which are:
- Emotional states:
An emotional state can lead you to make different decisions. When you have a negative emotion, you are more likely to make bad decisions, which is why it is important to be in constant search of emotions that are beneficial to us. One way to change our emotional states is to ask yourself the right questions at all times, since these are the ones that determine our thoughts, for example, if you have started a new project and it has not worked, you can ask two kinds of questions, the first They are discouraging like: why does everything go wrong for me? Why do I have such bad luck? These types of questions will not help you find true solutions, you must ask yourself questions that provide you with answers to change your situation, for example, when you have not had the expected results, ask yourself: what can I do to change this? How can I do it again? different way? These types of questions will help you change the things you are focusing your attention on. Discouraging questions make you focus on problems, which will inevitably cause your emotions to be negative; while if you ask yourself the right questions you can change your mood and find positive answers.
- Beliefs:
There are people who believe that there is no way to obtain wealth, that the only people who have it is because they had inherited it from their parents, they believe that no matter how brilliant their ideas are, if they do not have the monetary resources, everything will be lost. will come to nothing Someone with this type of belief will not even be able to start a new project if they are not capable of thinking for a moment that their ideas can be successful, they will not even take the trouble to try; If, on the other hand, you have cultivated your mind with different concepts, you will know that trying is the first step you can take. You may fail several times before achieving what you want, but each failure will be a new lesson learned. Begin to change those limiting beliefs and you will surely begin to see life in a different way.
- Values:
If you live under the most important value of your life you will be able to have a life with more meaning. Define which are the most relevant values that govern your life, because our values govern each and every one of the decisions we make.We all want love, security, intimacy, freedom, health, contribution and many other things, but each one of us has a different hierarchy. Someone who has decided to be a military man of his own free will is because he values courage and discipline above all else. In addition, someone who dedicates himself to medicine will do so out of a sense of contribution and help to others; therefore, if you are not being faithful to your values, you will not feel satisfaction.
- References:
These can determine our behavior and the way we do things. References are all the experiences you remember within your nervous system. The book tells the story of two sons whose father was an alcoholic and drug addict, one of them grew up and took the same wrong path as his father, while his brother studied and does a job in which he feels comfortable and has a good family. Both were asked: why has your life turned out this way? To which surprisingly both responded: with a father like the one I had, what else could I have become? As we can see, for one of them the experiences with his father reinforced the idea that life would be very difficult for him and that he would not have opportunities, on the contrary, for his brother they were experiences that led him to want to excel so as not to repeat the mistakes. his father's. In conclusion: "it is not what happens to us but how we interpret it". Sometimes family references are not the best, but you can find references through books, biographies, get inspired by those people who have achieved great things with their lives and try to emulate their successes.
- Rules:
Don't wait for all situations to be perfect in order to be happy. Express gratitude for all the things you have now, this way you will also allow your emotional states to lead to better decisions. In short, it is our decisions and not our conditions that affect our destiny. If we associate the negative consequences of our wrong decisions with pain, we can make decisions that lead us to better results. It is also important to keep in mind that we can make better decisions if we have positive emotions, if we change our limiting beliefs, if we discover what our main values are , if we change our references and if we do not establish rules to express gratitude and be happy.
I have also been in the place you are now. When I started my dream of starting my own Medical Clinic and was the CEO, I did not know how to fulfill my responsibilities at work while being present at home with my family. However, after making changes in my productivity, goal setting and leadership, I was able to take my company forward through an economic recession the country was in and achieve positive results; all while being home in time to have dinner with my family every night.
I now teach the same principles that helped my leadership, along with my team, here at CIME Academy.
