Book: "Talent is overrated".
Someone who works for 10 years in the same profession dedicating 40 hours a week, during this time could complete 20,000 hours of practice. This according to Robert Greene could be enough to reach the optimal level of mastery, but if we look around us we can find that most people, despite having a vast experience and having dedicated thousands and thousands of hours of work, only get to be good at what they do and are a small minority who achieve excellence. Those who achieve this higher level of expertise are able to create products that revolutionize industries and change the way we live.
Excellence is also manifested in sports or music with people whose skills allow them to have memorable performances. When observing people with admirable abilities, several explanations appear:
- He has achieved it because he has worked hard: we could say that someone is extremely good because he has spent a lot of time perfecting his skills, but according to what was stated previously, we can realize that the simple fact of putting in many hours of work is not going to convert us. in exceptional
- He has a special gift: to which many of us do not have access. This explanation might seem a little more satisfactory, but we can affirm that this is not a valid interpretation either.
- Superior intelligence: we could also affirm that some general abilities such as a high IQ.
- Exceptional memory: but according to research the correlation between IQ and extraordinary achievement is not as strong as one might think and in many cases there is no correlation at all.
It is clear that if we have two people doing a task for the first time, the one with a higher IQ does better at first, but various studies have shown that if both people continue to work on improving their skills, that difference becomes less and less until eventually it will disappear. Cognitive abilities turn out to be a good predictor of performance in unknown tasks, but this factor is not the common denominator in those who have achieved brilliant things; neither is memory. The book describes the case of a person who, by training continuously, managed to remember 82 digits when most of us normally retain approximately 7 numbers in our short-term memory. It is also noteworthy that those who play chess very frequently can remember the position of all 32 pieces at a glance. Memory is a skill to which we all have access, however it is not related to high performance either.
The author affirms the aspect that if it is closely related to the acquisition of skills, it is what some researchers call "Deliberate Practice", it is a series of activities designed specifically to improve our performance, this practice is very demanding at a mental level and does not It is characterized by being pleasant, sometimes it can even be tedious. Each one according to their needs and characteristics must design their own practice. A recommendation raised in the text is to identify from three circles:
- the comfort zone
- the learning zone
- the panic zone
Deliberate practice is designing activities to specifically improve our deficiencies. This type of practice is often difficult and tedious, since generally when we do something that is not easy for us we can feel frustrated, but it is this type of training that is ultimately decisive in order to have a true competitive advantage with with respect to other people who are not willing to do so; 10,000 hours of practice will only move us forward if we are constantly challenging ourselves and acquiring new skills.
I have also been before in the place that you are now. When I started my dream of starting my own Medical Clinic and was the CEO, I didn't know how to fulfill my responsibilities at work and be present at home with my family at the same time. However, after making changes in my productivity, goal setting, and leadership, I was able to move my company forward through an economic downturn in which the country was immersed and obtain positive results; and all while getting home in time to have dinner with my family each night.
Now I teach the same principles that helped my leadership, along with my team, here at CIME Academy.
